Not the worst, but not the best film either. This film could have been good. I saw Spielberg's name somewhere in the opening credits – should have taken it as a warning. I watch films for their entertainment value and not to be hyper-critical; however, some things leap out at you.
The story is set in the near future where robo-boxing has replaced human boxing. This concept is novel, but was not developed fully. Thus, it is not clear whether the robots fought independently or were controlled by humans; perhaps this is still a developing technology. As with many Hollywood films, it starts off strong and about mid-way through looses steam and turns into the same old shoot 'em up. The robots have a nice "Robocop" clunky feel to them.
There are essentially two parallel stories – down and out former boxer (loser) has a crack at the title via his son and a Disney type father bonding with unknown son. There is a minor side plot as Hugh Jackman's character has annoyed many people and owes considerable money. Overall, the story is linear and the father/son /robot team do not suffer any major setbacks in their rise to the championship fight.
Hugh Jackman's character is rather unpleasant. When his robot is trashed, he makes no attempt at repairing it. Rather he chucks it away as a disposable commodity and proceeds to incur yet more debt and enemies by buying another one. There have been comments on the Max Kenton character. I find that the character oscillates between being likable and being mega irritating. As it is a father-son bonding film, expect many moments of tugging at one's heart strings.
I would not rate this film as one-star as some reviewers have done, although I acknowledge their comments as valid; I reckon it's about 5 to 6.
